The exam
What is UPSC Civil Services?
UPSC Civil Services is the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination, a professional exam (India). A three-stage examination held once a year. The preliminary stage has an objective general studies paper and a qualifying aptitude paper. The main stage is descriptive, with an essay paper, several general studies papers covering history, geography, polity, economy, environment, science, ethics and current affairs, two papers in a chosen optional subject, and qualifying language papers. A personality test interview follows. The process rewards broad reading, balanced opinions and clear written argument.
Who takes it: Graduates seeking entry into the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign Service and other central civil services.

How to prepare
Studying for UPSC Civil Services, step by step
01
Prioritise
Build a daily newspaper and government-report habit from day one; current affairs runs through every stage and cannot be crammed late.
02
Practise
Write answers by hand against the clock from the beginning of preparation, since the main examination rewards structured, concise prose, not knowledge alone.
03
Avoid the traps
Pick an optional subject you can sustain for a long cycle; a scoring reputation matters less than genuine interest and available guidance.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
