The exam
What is SSC CGL?
SSC CGL is the Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level Examination, a professional exam (India). A multi-tier computer-based recruitment examination. The first tier screens candidates with objective questions in reasoning, general awareness, quantitative aptitude and English, with negative marking. The second tier goes deeper in mathematics, reasoning, English and general awareness, adds computer knowledge and a data entry speed test, and includes a statistics or finance paper for specific posts. Posts are allotted by merit and preference, and document verification follows.
Who takes it: Graduates seeking Group B and Group C posts in central government ministries, departments and organisations such as tax, audit and statistical offices.
What it tests
SSC CGL subjects and sections
- General Intelligence and Reasoning
- General Awareness
- Quantitative Aptitude
- English Comprehension
- Computer Knowledge
- Statistics (for some posts)
Ask any topic from any of these and the tutor pitches the lesson to the exam, with the terms and the depth it expects.
How to prepare
Studying for SSC CGL, step by step
01
Prioritise
Quantitative aptitude and English decide the ranking, so practise arithmetic shortcuts and grammar rules every day instead of only reading theory.
02
Practise
General awareness covers static facts and recent events; revise concise notes repeatedly rather than reading new sources in the final weeks.
03
Avoid the traps
Mock tests with negative marking teach you which guesses to skip, which matters more here than in school exams.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
