The exam
What is Maturità?
Maturità is the Esame di Stato conclusivo del secondo ciclo di istruzione (Esame di maturità), a school leaving exam (Italy). A national examination with a common first written paper in Italian offering several text types, a second written paper in the subject that characterises the school type, and an oral examination before a commission of internal and external teachers. The oral covers multiple subjects, civic education and the student's work-based learning experience. School credits accumulated over the final years combine with examination marks into the final result.
Who takes it: Students finishing upper secondary school in Italy, whether at a liceo, technical or vocational institute, who need the diploma for university entry.

How to prepare
Studying for Maturità, step by step
01
Prioritise
Credits from the last years count toward the result, so classroom performance before the examination is already part of the final mark.
02
Practise
Practise the Italian paper's text types, especially argumentative writing, with attention to structure and to citing the source text accurately.
03
Avoid the traps
Prepare the oral by building links between subjects, since the commission starts from a prompt and expects connected, cross-subject reasoning.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
