The idea
What is The Bauhaus?
The Bauhaus was a German school of art, design and architecture founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, moved to Dessau in 1925 and closed under Nazi pressure in 1933. It aimed to unite art, craft and industry, teaching form, colour and materials before workshops in weaving, metal, furniture, typography and building. Teachers included Kandinsky, Klee, Moholy-Nagy and Mies van der Rohe. Its ideas, that form follows function and ornament should go, shaped modern furniture, graphics and architecture.

Where learners get stuck
Why The Bauhaus is hard
Students treat the Bauhaus as a single style, when it was a school whose output ranged widely, and they confuse its three phases and three directors. Why its plain designs were radical in the 1920s needs context.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A timeline of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin with each director named, surrounded by icons of signature works: the Wassily chair, the Dessau building, a Bayer typeface and a Kandinsky colour-and-shape exercise.
A lesson, step by step
How a lesson on The Bauhaus goes
01
Ask
Type or say "What did the Bauhaus actually teach?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.
02
Plan
The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a timeline of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin with each director named, surrounded by icons of signature works: the Wassily chair, the Dessau building, a Bayer typeface and a Kandinsky colour-and-shape exercise.
03
Explain
It explains The Bauhaus out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (A Level Art and Design and up).
04
Interrupt
Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.
05
Check
A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.
06
Your notes
Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.
