The idea
What is Art Deco?
Art Deco is the decorative style that flourished between the two world wars, named after the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. It combined geometric forms, zigzags, sunbursts, chevrons and stepped shapes with luxurious materials such as chrome, lacquer, exotic woods and glass, and drew on Egyptian, Aztec and machine-age motifs. It appeared in skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building, in Miami's hotels, in posters, jewellery, cinemas and ocean liners, and in India in the buildings of Marine Drive, Mumbai. It expressed glamour, speed and modernity.
Where it appears: A Level Art and Design, AP Art History, IB Visual Arts, architecture degree history modules, NID and NIFT entrance.
Where learners get stuck
Why Art Deco is hard
Learners confuse Art Deco with the earlier, flowing Art Nouveau and with the stripped-down Bauhaus. Its mix of handcraft luxury and machine-age geometry seems contradictory until the social mood of the 1920s is explained.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A side-by-side of an Art Nouveau whiplash curve against an Art Deco sunburst, then a sheet of Deco motifs (chevron, stepped skyline, fan) beside the Chrysler Building's crown.
A lesson, step by step
How a lesson on Art Deco goes
01
Ask
Type or say "How is Art Deco different from Art Nouveau?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.
02
Plan
The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a side-by-side of an Art Nouveau whiplash curve against an Art Deco sunburst, then a sheet of Deco motifs (chevron, stepped skyline, fan) beside the Chrysler Building's crown.
03
Explain
It explains Art Deco out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (A Level Art and Design and up).
04
Interrupt
Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.
05
Check
A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.
06
Your notes
Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.
