Prepare for NCEA with a visual teacher

National Certificate of Educational Achievement: every topic on the syllabus, explained out loud with live visuals by a 1:1 AI teacher that stops when you interrupt and checks you got it.

The exam

What is NCEA?

NCEA is the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, a school leaving exam (New Zealand). A standards-based qualification at three levels, where students gain credits by meeting achievement standards assessed either internally by the school during the year or externally in end-of-year examinations. Each standard is graded as not achieved, achieved, merit or excellence. University entrance requires a set pattern of credits at the top level, including literacy and numeracy. The government has announced a phased replacement with new certificates later in the decade.

Who takes it: Secondary students in New Zealand across the final three years of school, who use it for school leaving, university entrance and employment.

What it tests

NCEA subjects and sections

  • English
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Te Reo Maori
  • Technology
  • Arts

Ask any topic from any of these and the tutor pitches the lesson to the exam, with the terms and the depth it expects.

How to prepare

Studying for NCEA, step by step

  1. 01

    Prioritise

Internal assessments spread across the year make up a large share of credits, so plan the calendar and avoid clustering them together.

  2. 02

    Practise

Excellence grades require insight and depth, not just correctness; practise explaining why and linking evidence to conclusions in every answer.

  3. 03

    Avoid the traps

Plan credits around university entrance requirements from Level 2 onward, including approved subjects and literacy and numeracy standards.

  4. 04

    Ask, then watch

Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.

  5. 05

    Interrupt and check

Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.

  6. 06

    Your papers

Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.

Ask it anything

Questions NCEA students ask

Can I use my own NCEA past papers and notes?

Yes. Upload PDFs and images, such as photos of class notes or a past paper, up to 3 files per session and 10 MB each, and the tutor grounds the session in them. The Tests section adds tests from a question bank and AI tests, graded on the server.
