The exam
What is HSC?
HSC is the Higher School Certificate (New South Wales), a school leaving exam (Australia (New South Wales)). Awarded by the NSW Education Standards Authority on the basis of school-based assessment across the final year and external examinations in each course. English is compulsory, and courses are offered at several levels. Examinations include multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-response questions, plus major works or practicals in creative and technical subjects. Course results are then scaled by the admissions centre to produce an ATAR for university applications.
Who takes it: Students completing Year 12 in New South Wales, whose results form their school leaving credential and feed into the ATAR for university entry.

How to prepare
Studying for HSC, step by step
01
Prioritise
School-based assessment counts for half of each course, so every assessment task across Year 12 matters as much as the final examination.
02
Practise
Extended responses are marked against criteria such as judgement and synthesis; practise writing with the marking rubric beside you.
03
Avoid the traps
Learn to unpack the question's verb, such as evaluate or analyse, because the marking guidelines follow those verbs closely.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
Ask it anything
Questions HSC students ask
- Explain how to analyse a prescribed text for Advanced English.
- Teach me projectile motion for HSC Physics.
- How do I write an Economics extended response on inflation?
Questions
Asked, Answered
Can LetMeTeach help me prepare for HSC?
Yes. Ask any topic from the HSC syllabus and the tutor plans a lesson pitched to the exam, explains it out loud with live visuals, stops when you interrupt, and asks a checkpoint question. School-based assessment counts for half of each course, so every assessment task across Year 12 matters as much as the final examination.
Can I use my own HSC past papers and notes?
Yes. Upload PDFs and images, such as photos of class notes or a past paper, up to 3 files per session and 10 MB each, and the tutor grounds the session in them. The Tests section adds tests from a question bank and AI tests, graded on the server.
Does it teach in the language I study HSC in?
LetMeTeach teaches in 26 languages (including English) and plans the lesson in the language you choose rather than translating it. The Free plan includes 7 hours a month with no card.
