The exam
What is GRE?
GRE is the Graduate Record Examinations General Test, a postgraduate entrance exam (Worldwide). A computer-delivered test taken at a centre or at home, consisting of an analytical writing task, two verbal reasoning sections and two quantitative reasoning sections. The test is section-adaptive, so performance on the first section of each type sets the difficulty of the second. Verbal questions emphasise vocabulary in context and reading comprehension; quantitative questions cover arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis with an on-screen calculator.
Who takes it: Graduates applying to master's, doctoral and some business and law programmes, mainly in the United States, Canada and Europe.
What it tests
GRE subjects and sections
- Verbal Reasoning
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Analytical Writing
Ask any topic from any of these and the tutor pitches the lesson to the exam, with the terms and the depth it expects.
How to prepare
Studying for GRE, step by step
01
Prioritise
Verbal success depends on high-frequency vocabulary read in context, so study words with example sentences rather than isolated lists.
02
Practise
Quantitative comparison questions have their own logic; learn to test cases and avoid assuming variables are positive integers.
03
Avoid the traps
Universities weigh the sections differently, so find out whether your programme cares about verbal, quantitative or writing before allocating time.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
