The idea

What is The American Civil War?

The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 between the United States (the Union) and eleven Southern states that seceded to form the Confederacy after Abraham Lincoln's election. At its root was slavery: the South's economy depended on enslaved labour, and the question of whether new western territories would allow it split the nation. The Union's industrial strength and naval blockade wore the South down; Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation reframed the war, and the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox.

Where it appears: AP US History, US high school history, IGCSE and IB History, ICSE Class 10 world history units.

Where learners get stuck

Why The American Civil War is hard

Learners repeat that the war was about states' rights without asking rights to do what, and confuse the Emancipation Proclamation (a wartime measure covering Confederate states only) with the Thirteenth Amendment that actually ended slavery.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A map of the United States in 1861 coloured into Union, Confederate and border states, with the Mississippi, the naval blockade and the main campaign arrows marked.
