The idea
What is The French Revolution?
The French Revolution was the upheaval that began in 1789 when France's heavily indebted monarchy, an unequal tax system and food shortages pushed the Third Estate to declare itself a National Assembly. Crowds stormed the Bastille, feudal privileges were abolished, and the Declaration of the Rights of Man proclaimed liberty and equality. The monarchy fell in 1792, Louis XVI was executed, the Reign of Terror followed, and in 1799 Napoleon Bonaparte seized power, ending the revolutionary decade.

Where learners get stuck
Why The French Revolution is hard
Learners merge the causes into one vague idea that people were angry and lose the sequence: fiscal crisis, Estates-General, National Assembly, Bastille, constitutional monarchy, republic, Terror, Napoleon. The three Estates and who actually paid taxes also get mixed up.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A pyramid of the three Estates showing who held land and who paid taxes, then a timeline from 1789 to 1799 with the key turning points marked.
