The idea

What is Spanish verb conjugation?

Spanish verb conjugation is the system of changing a verb's ending to show who is acting and when. Every verb belongs to one of three families by its infinitive ending, -ar, -er or -ir, and each family has a set of endings for the six persons (yo, tú, él or ella, nosotros, vosotros, ellos). Because the ending already says who the subject is, Spanish often drops the pronoun. Regular verbs follow the pattern exactly; irregular verbs like ser, ir and tener change their stems.

Where it appears: GCSE and IGCSE Spanish, AP Spanish Language, IB Spanish B, DELE levels A1 to B2, school Spanish courses.

Where learners get stuck

Why Spanish verb conjugation is hard

Learners must hold three families times many tenses in memory, cope with stem-changing verbs (pensar becomes pienso), and tell the preterite from the imperfect, two past tenses that English folds into one.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A conjugation table for hablar, comer and vivir side by side in the present tense, with the shared stem in grey and the six changing endings coloured.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on Spanish verb conjugation goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "How do I know which ending to use for a Spanish verb?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a conjugation table for hablar, comer and vivir side by side in the present tense, with the shared stem in grey and the six changing endings coloured.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains Spanish verb conjugation out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (GCSE and IGCSE Spanish and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.

  6. 06

    Your notes

Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.
