The idea

What is Natural resources and mining?

Natural resources and mining cover the materials people take from the earth and how they are extracted. Resources are renewable, such as forests, water and solar energy, or non-renewable, such as coal, petroleum, iron ore and bauxite, which cannot be replaced once used. Mining extracts minerals by open-cast pits, underground shafts or drilling for oil and gas; in India the Chota Nagpur plateau holds much of the coal and iron. Mining supports industry but scars land, pollutes water and displaces communities.

Where it appears: Class 8 and 10 NCERT Geography, CBSE and ICSE, state boards, IGCSE Geography, UPSC prelims and mains.

Where learners get stuck

Why Natural resources and mining is hard

Learners confuse minerals with rocks and ores, cannot say why a resource is renewable or not, and memorise mineral belts without linking them to the geology of the peninsular plateau.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A map of India's mineral belts with coal, iron ore, bauxite and manganese marked, next to a cut-away showing an open-cast mine and an underground shaft.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on Natural resources and mining goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "Why is coal found mainly in eastern India?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a map of India's mineral belts with coal, iron ore, bauxite and manganese marked, next to a cut-away showing an open-cast mine and an underground shaft.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains Natural resources and mining out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 8 and 10 NCERT Geography and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.

  6. 06

    Your notes

Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.

Ask it anything

Questions learners ask about Natural resources and mining

  • Why is coal found mainly in eastern India?
  • What is the difference between a mineral and an ore?
  • How does mining damage the environment around it?

Any of these, or your own, typed or spoken. The tutor answers on the picture and adapts to how well you are following.
