The idea
What is Weathering and the rock cycle?
Weathering and the rock cycle explain how rocks change over time. The three rock families are igneous, formed when magma cools; sedimentary, formed when layers of sediment are compacted and cemented; and metamorphic, formed when existing rock is altered by heat and pressure. The rock cycle links them: any rock can be weathered into sediment, buried into new rock, melted, or uplifted again. Weathering itself breaks rock down in place by frost, plant roots or chemical reactions such as rainwater dissolving limestone.
Where it appears: Class 7 and 11 NCERT Geography, CBSE and ICSE, IGCSE and IB Geography, KS3 Science, UPSC prelims.
Where learners get stuck
Why Weathering and the rock cycle is hard
Learners read the rock cycle as a fixed sequence rather than a web of possible paths, and confuse physical with chemical weathering or weathering with erosion, which moves material rather than breaking it.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A circular diagram with igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock at three points, arrows for melting, cooling, weathering, deposition, burial and uplift, each labelled.
A lesson, step by step
How a lesson on Weathering and the rock cycle goes
01
Ask
Type or say "How does a sedimentary rock turn into a metamorphic one?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.
02
Plan
The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a circular diagram with igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock at three points, arrows for melting, cooling, weathering, deposition, burial and uplift, each labelled.
03
Explain
It explains Weathering and the rock cycle out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 7 and 11 NCERT Geography and up).
04
Interrupt
Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.
05
Check
A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.
06
Your notes
Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.
Ask it anything
Questions learners ask about Weathering and the rock cycle
- How does a sedimentary rock turn into a metamorphic one?
- What is the difference between physical and chemical weathering?
- Can a metamorphic rock become igneous again?
Any of these, or your own, typed or spoken. The tutor answers on the picture and adapts to how well you are following.
