The idea
What is Impressionism and Monet?
Impressionism and Monet refers to the movement that began in Paris in the 1870s, named after Claude Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise, and to its leading figure. Impressionists painted outdoors, quickly, in broken dabs of unmixed colour, to catch light and atmosphere at a particular moment rather than polished detail. They chose modern subjects, boulevards, railway stations, picnics and river scenes, and were first rejected by the official Salon. Monet's series of haystacks, Rouen Cathedral and water lilies show the same subject under changing light.

Where learners get stuck
Why Impressionism and Monet is hard
Learners see 'blurry' paintings and miss that the looseness is deliberate and that colour, not line, builds the form. Separating Impressionism from the Post-Impressionists who followed also causes confusion.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A close-up patch of a Monet canvas showing separate dabs of colour, next to the same patch seen from a distance where the dabs fuse, and two paintings of Rouen Cathedral at different times of day.
