The exam
What is WASSCE?
WASSCE is the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, a school leaving exam (Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia). Conducted by the West African Examinations Council for school candidates and separately for private candidates. Each subject usually has an objective paper, an essay or theory paper, and practical or oral tests where relevant. Candidates sit a broad set of subjects with English and mathematics compulsory. Grades are reported per subject and universities require specified combinations, often alongside a national entrance test such as Nigeria's UTME.
Who takes it: Students finishing senior secondary school in West African countries, who need the certificate for university admission and many jobs.

How to prepare
Studying for WASSCE, step by step
01
Prioritise
Theory papers reward full, well-labelled answers and correct terminology; practise writing them out in full, not just picking options.
02
Practise
English and mathematics are needed for nearly every course, so make them non-negotiable daily subjects throughout the year.
03
Avoid the traps
Use the official syllabus and marking schemes to focus on topics examined regularly rather than covering every textbook chapter equally.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
