The exam
What is Gaokao?
Gaokao is the National College Entrance Examination (Putong Gaodeng Xuexiao Zhaosheng Quanguo Tongyi Kaoshi), a university entrance exam (China). Held nationwide over consecutive days, with Chinese, mathematics and a foreign language compulsory, and in most provinces a choice between physics and history plus further electives under the reformed subject-selection model. Papers combine multiple-choice, fill-in and extended written answers, including the well-known Chinese essay. Provinces set or adopt papers and manage admissions, and scores are compared within each province. The examination rewards disciplined, thorough preparation across all subjects.
Who takes it: Final-year senior high school students in mainland China, for whom the score largely determines admission to universities and the programmes they may enter.

How to prepare
Studying for Gaokao, step by step
01
Prioritise
Mathematics and the Chinese essay separate candidates most, so practise argumentative essays weekly and solve full mathematics papers under time.
02
Practise
Subject choice determines which university programmes you can apply to, so align physics or history with your intended degree early.
03
Avoid the traps
Three years of revision cycles are the norm; keep an error notebook per subject and reattempt mistakes rather than only doing new papers.
04
Ask, then watch
Type or say a topic in your own words; the tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, and explains it step by step.
05
Interrupt and check
Say "wait, why?" mid-explanation and it answers on the picture; a checkpoint question ends every lesson.
06
Your papers
Upload past papers and notes so the practice follows the exam, and use Tests for graded tests.
