The idea
What is The multiplier effect?
The multiplier effect is the process by which an initial change in spending causes a larger final change in national income. When the government spends on a new road, contractors and workers receive income, spend part of it, which becomes income for others who spend part again, and so on. Its size depends on the marginal propensity to consume, the fraction of each extra rupee spent: the multiplier is one divided by one minus that fraction. Leakages into savings, taxes and imports shrink it.
Where it appears: Class 12 CBSE Economics (Income Determination), ISC, IGCSE and A Level Economics, IB and AP Macroeconomics, UPSC prelims.
Where learners get stuck
Why The multiplier effect is hard
Learners treat the multiplier as a fixed number, cannot derive it from the spending-becomes-income chain, confuse it with the money multiplier in banking, and forget that taxes and imports leak out at each round.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A cascade of boxes where an initial spend splits into a consumed part passed on and a saved part leaking out, each round smaller, with the running total converging on the final income rise.
A lesson, step by step
How a lesson on The multiplier effect goes

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a cascade of boxes where an initial spend splits into a consumed part passed on and a saved part leaking out, each round smaller, with the running total converging on the final income rise.
03
Explain
It explains The multiplier effect out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 12 CBSE Economics (Income Determination) and up).
04
