The idea
What is The Meiji Restoration?
The Meiji Restoration was the political revolution of 1868 that ended the Tokugawa shogunate, restored the emperor as the head of the Japanese state, and launched a deliberate programme to turn Japan into a modern industrial power. Shocked by Commodore Perry's arrival in 1853 and the unequal treaties that followed, the new leaders abolished the samurai class, created a conscript army, built railways and factories, adopted a constitution in 1889, and sent students abroad to learn Western science, law and industry.

Where learners get stuck
Why The Meiji Restoration is hard
The word restoration misleads: the emperor gained symbolic authority but real power went to a small group of reforming oligarchs. Learners also miss why Japan modernised successfully while China's reforms of the same period struggled.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A before-and-after of Japan in 1850 and 1900: closed ports and samurai on one side, railways, factories, a conscript army and a parliament on the other, joined by a timeline of reforms.
