The idea
What is Stocks and bonds?
Stocks and bonds are the two main ways companies and governments raise money from investors. A stock, or share, is a slice of ownership in a company: shareholders may receive dividends and gain if the share price rises, but they bear the risk of losses and are paid last if the firm fails. A bond is a loan to a company or government: the issuer promises fixed coupon interest and repayment of the principal at maturity. Bond prices move opposite to interest rates.

Where learners get stuck
Why Stocks and bonds is hard
Learners cannot see why a bond's price falls when interest rates rise, think a share's price equals the company's value, and confuse the primary market where securities are issued with the secondary market where they are traded.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A company drawn in the middle with shares flowing out to owners who get dividends and bonds flowing out to lenders who get coupons, and a see-saw showing bond prices against interest rates.
