The idea
What is Reproduction in flowering plants?
Reproduction in flowering plants is the sexual process by which flowers make seeds. The stamen produces pollen containing the male gametes; the carpel holds the ovary with ovules containing the female gametes. Pollination transfers pollen to the stigma, by insects, wind or other carriers. A pollen tube then grows down the style to the ovule, where double fertilisation produces both the embryo and the nutritive endosperm.
Where it appears: Class 7, 10 and 12 CBSE and ICSE, GCSE and A-level, IB Biology, NEET.
Where learners get stuck
Why Reproduction in flowering plants is hard
Learners treat pollination and fertilisation as the same event, and cannot explain what double fertilisation is or why insect-pollinated and wind-pollinated flowers look so different.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A flower in section with stamen, anther, stigma, style and ovary labelled, a pollen grain on the stigma growing a tube down to an ovule with two male nuclei shown.
A lesson, step by step
How a lesson on Reproduction in flowering plants goes
01
Ask
Type or say "What is the difference between pollination and fertilisation?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.
02
Plan
The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a flower in section with stamen, anther, stigma, style and ovary labelled, a pollen grain on the stigma growing a tube down to an ovule with two male nuclei shown.
03
Explain
It explains Reproduction in flowering plants out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 7 and up).
04
