The idea
What is Opportunity cost?
Opportunity cost is the value of the next most valuable alternative given up when a choice is made. Because resources, time and money are limited, every decision to use them one way means not using them another: an evening spent studying gives up a shift's earnings, and a highway gives up the schools that money could have funded. The true cost of anything is not just what is paid but what is forgone, which the production possibility curve shows.
Where it appears: Class 11 CBSE Economics, ISC, IGCSE and A Level Economics, IB and AP Economics, CUET, UPSC prelims.
Where learners get stuck
Why Opportunity cost is hard
Learners add up all the forgone options instead of only the single next most valuable one, ignore costs that are not money (time, enjoyment), and treat sunk costs already spent as if they were still a cost of choosing.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A production possibility curve with two goods on the axes, and an arrow moving along it showing how much of one good must be given up to gain more of the other.
