The idea

What is Magic realism?

Magic realism is a style of fiction in which impossible events, a woman rising to heaven while hanging sheets, a child born with a pig's tail, are told in the same calm, matter-of-fact voice as ordinary life, and the characters accept them without surprise. It is linked above all to Latin American writers such as Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende, and in English to Salman Rushdie and Toni Morrison. The magic often carries political or historical meaning that plain realism could not.

Where it appears: A Level and IB Language A, AP Literature, university world and Latin American literature courses, CBSE and ISC Class 12.

Where learners get stuck

Why Magic realism is hard

Students label any book with a dragon as magic realism, when the point is the deadpan tone and realistic setting. Explaining why a writer chooses the impossible, rather than just spotting it, is the hard part.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A scale with fantasy at one end and realism at the other, magic realism marked near the realism end, and a sample paragraph with its impossible event circled and its unbothered tone annotated.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on Magic realism goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "How is magic realism different from fantasy?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a scale with fantasy at one end and realism at the other, magic realism marked near the realism end, and a sample paragraph with its impossible event circled and its unbothered tone annotated.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains Magic realism out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (A Level and IB Language A and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.

  6. 06

    Your notes

Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.
