The idea

What is Kabir's dohas?

Kabir's dohas are the two-line verses of Kabir, the fifteenth-century weaver-poet who belongs to the Bhakti and Sant tradition. A doha is a couplet in a set metre, and Kabir uses it to attack ritual, caste and religious division and to teach plain wisdom with homely images: the clay pot, the grinding stone, the river. His language is a mixed, colloquial Hindi, and the couplets survive in the Bijak, the Guru Granth Sahib and oral tradition.

Where it appears: CBSE and ICSE Hindi Classes 8 to 12, Indian state board Hindi, NCERT Hindi textbooks, university Hindi and Bhakti literature.

Where learners get stuck

Why Kabir's dohas is hard

The old mixed dialect needs a gloss, the images are deliberately paradoxical (ulatbansi), and students reduce each doha to a moral line when Kabir's point is often a sharp attack on both Hindu and Muslim orthodoxy.

The picture a good explanation starts with: One doha written out with its two lines, the metre's syllable count marked, each image sketched beside it and the plain meaning and the deeper, spiritual meaning written in two rows below.
