The idea

What is Jazz improvisation?

Jazz improvisation is the spontaneous invention of melody over a tune's chord progression, within an agreed form. A soloist follows the changes, usually a thirty-two-bar song or twelve-bar blues, and chooses notes from the scale or mode that fits each chord, the chord tones on strong beats and passing notes between them. Players learn the language by transcribing solos, memorising licks, and practising the ii, V, I progression in every key, then shape phrases with rhythm, space and swing feel.

Where it appears: ABRSM Jazz and Trinity Rock and Pop grades, A Level Music, IB Music, conservatoire jazz programmes, university jazz studies.

Where learners get stuck

Why Jazz improvisation is hard

Learners run scales up and down instead of making phrases, lose their place in the form, and cannot hear chord changes quickly enough. Swing feel and leaving space are harder than playing more notes.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A twelve-bar blues grid with its chords in each bar, the matching scale written under each chord, and a short improvised phrase drawn across the bars with chord tones marked on the strong beats.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on Jazz improvisation goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "Which scale should I play over which chord in jazz?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a twelve-bar blues grid with its chords in each bar, the matching scale written under each chord, and a short improvised phrase drawn across the bars with chord tones marked on the strong beats.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains Jazz improvisation out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (ABRSM Jazz and Trinity Rock and Pop grades and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Tests keep the practice going.

Ask it anything
